There are two categories of horse racing gamblers. The vast majority both on the race course and in the betting shops who are what I would classify as fun or hobby punters. The much smaller group are those who can be classified as professional punters. When I use the term professional I do not mean that this is their sole source of income. I class any one who approaches their betting in a logical and systematic manner as a professional.
If you wish to become a professional punter here are 6 tips that can help you:
1. Plan. Before you start you should have a plan. Decide what your target market I going to be, i.e. backing on track, laying on the exchanges or specialising in the all, weather. Also decide what size your level stake betting is going to be. In the beginning you should set this at a low level and possibly increase it as you become more confident and successful.
2..Discipline. You need to adopt a disciplined approach and this will require you to spend uninterrupted time studying the current days racing and making your selection.
3. Record Keeping. There is only going to be one yardstick with which to judge your success and that is how much money you have made or lost. You need to be able to assess both your successes and failures and the only way you can do this is by keeping records of all your betting activities.
4. Betting Bank. Before you begin you need to set aside an amount to use as your betting bank. This should be a reasonable amount so that you can stand any immediate losses. Ideally it should be enough so that you can set your stake level at 1% or 2% of your bank. You should never bet more than you can comfortably afford to lose.
5. Focus. It is very easy to get distracted and lose site of your original plan, Do not flit from one horse racing system to another, unless it is obvious it does not work stick with what you have. Do not be tempted by claims of big winnings, they never materialise.
6. Knowledge. I do not think it has ever been easier to obtain knowledge about horse racing. Apart from practically every race being on television, there are books and articles galore on every aspect of horse racing. There is also a wealth of knowledge on the Internet. The more you learn about horse racing the better a punter you will become.
7. Specialise. Horse Racing is a vast subject and in the UK there are 3 distinct types of horse race, The Flat, National Hunt (NH) and All Weather. Within each of these are sub groups such as in the case of NH, hurdles and chases, handicaps, non handicaps, "bumpers" or NH Flat races, novices, maiden's, sellers and so on. It is impossible to be an expert in all of these different types of racing. Specialise in one type of racing and maybe even drill down further and concentrate for instance on hurdle races. Become an expert is your area and you will see your profits grow.
